Blackberry Varieties at Hargreaves Plants

Hargreaves Plants is one of Europe's major blackberry nurseries.  It is at the forefront of many important developments in global blackberry genetics

Most important to the business is its unique relationship with the University of Arkansas.  Working alongside Professor John Clark from the University, Hargreaves Plants is developing a whole range of new cultivars that will take the industry forward quickly over the coming years.

Just as important as having access to the best germplasm is the ability to produce high quality plant material.  Hargreaves Plants is ideally placed in this respect by making optimum use of its sophisticated tissue culture laboratory.

  • Blackberries from The University of Arkansas

Blackberries from the University of Arkansas

    Floricane
The floricane cultivars from the University of Arkansas are characterised by their exceptional flavour.  They are often marketed out of the USA as 'super sweet'; a tag that highlights exactly how good they are to eat.  In addition to this, their erect habit and thornless canes allow for easy management and berry harvest.  This combination is truly unique worldwide.

The varieties currently offered by Hargreaves Plants are Natchez, Ouachita, Arapaho, Navaho and Apache.
This excellent germplasm is now being marketed exclusively within Europe by Hargreaves Plants and is set to take its rightful leading place in markets worldwide.

    Primocane General - Primocane selection

Hargreaves Plants is working with Professor John Clark, breeder at the University of Arkansas, to commercially develop the world's most advanced primocane blackberries.  This is a huge process involving selection work on a vast number of seedlings annually and is supported under the England Rural Development Programme by the Department for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs and the European Agricultural Guidance and Guarantee Fund.

The benefits of primocanes are principally in the area of season extension.  The fruits are borne on the new canes in their first year of growth and therefore reduce the the time from planting to first harvest.  With the standard floricane types, it is necessary to wait a full season before the first berries are yielded.
